Undergraduate Training

Since its establishment as a teaching hospital in 2007, the NDUTH has remained a hub for training of all cadres of undergraduate health workers in Bayelsa state including doctors, nurses and other paramedical health workers. The hospital continues to receive undergraduate students for clinical rotation and attachment from various health and educational institutions within and outside Bayelsa State. A few of such institutions include:

Training of Post-graduate students from NDU

A number of post-graduate students, including Master’s and Doctoral degree students, from Niger Delta University continue to use the NDUTH as a research institution for their dissertations. Health professionals working in NDUTH have also partnered with colleagues from the NDU in the supervision of such dissertations.

The training of post-graduate health workers is a major mandate of the NDUTH. The management of NDUTH is sparing no effort to see that accreditation is obtained from all relevant professional and institutional bodies to train all categories of post-graduate health workers.

Residency Training

Following accreditation by the various professional bodies, the NDUTH is the major clinical training institution for medical, nursing and medical laboratory scientist students, as well as other paramedical students, from NDU.

Since obtaining accreditation from Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) in 2011 as a training institution for doctors, the NDUTH partnering with the College of Health Sciences, NDU, has successfully graduated three sets of medical doctors. Several sets of nurses and other paramedics have also successfully graduated as qualified professionals through the platform for clinical training provided by NDUTH.

The hospital has received partial accreditation (from 2012 to 2014) from the National Post-graduate College of Nigeria and the West African College of Physicians to train resident doctors as specialist in the fields of Anesthesia, Pediatrics and Surgery. The management is making efforts to obtain accreditation for training of residents in three more specialists’ areas including Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ophthalmology and Internal Medicine within the next year (2014-2015).
